FALL 2022 SESSIONS COMING SOON!
Please email brooke@composeyourself.co if you’d like to be notified when new classes are posted, and/or sign up for my newsletter at the bottom of this page.
This session will take place online on Thursday evenings (although the day of the week could be changed if necessary so please email me regarding other options.)
The two-hour class is designed to divide good writing into its constituent parts and show you how to do it yourself. Half of each class will be devoted to craft: the nuts and bolts skills that writers use to affect us as readers. We’ll read examples of excellent writing, breaking down exactly how and why they achieve their effects; then we can experiment with exercises and games to replicate those effects in our own work. The second half of the class will be used for peer review; we’ll read each other’s writing in a supportive and generative fashion, offering specific and constructive feedback, influenced by the craft elements we are working on.
You can expect to have some reading and writing to do at home; everyone will follow the same prompts to write and edit a piece of writing over the 8 week period and everyone will have feedback on their work at least twice so that they can share their revisions with the group. At the end of the 8 weeks you should have a clear sense of how to take the skills you’ve learned into either your day job or your work as a creative writer or both.
This class is an introduction for anyone who wants to start thinking about improving their writing. It does not assume any prior experience of writing for any audience and it does not discuss publication.
