Are you offering in person classes?

Compose Yoursef’s winter session (beginning late January 2022) will be held entirely virtually, due to the current Omicron surge. I hope to open up in-person classes in the spring, and those will take place throughout north Brooklyn. Please sign up for updates to be the first to know about new classes, and/or email me to tell me where and when you’d like to take a class.

What are your Covid protocols?

For the time being, classes are held online.

Once we return to in-person, everyone will be required to show proof of vaccination, including a booster. All classrooms have air purifiers and good ventilation. We will follow CDC/NYC rules on masking and make sure everyone feels safe.

How does payment work?

Once you’ve signed up and the minimum enrollment requirement for the class is met, you’ll receive a PayPal invoice so you can pay with a debit or credit card.

Do you offer sliding-scale pricing?

Yes, please email me to discuss this because I would hate for anyone not to take my class due to financial reasons. We’ll make it work.

I can’t make it to the classes I see listed on your site. Are you planning on offering classes at other times/dates/locations?

Yes. Please email me to let me know what would work for you. You should also sign up here for my email updates so you can be the first to know about new classes.

I’ve never taken a writing class before. Can I take your class?

Please do! This is a class for people who want to learn the fundamentals of good writing and I make no assumptions about what you’ve read or written before.

What can I expect from your class?

I don’t want to publish my writing or be a professional writer. Can I still take your class?

Please do! This is a class for people who want to get better at writing, which is not necessarily the same as being a capital W Writer.

I do want to publish my work. Can you help me?

No, but I can point you towards people who will.

Will you tell me what to write about?

Only if you want me to! While I will be assigning writing, I won’t dictate the content unless you’d like me to, in which case, I’m happy to provide suggestions. We’ll be doing plenty of short exercises and games during our classes, which will generate lots of material and ideas. Don’t worry if you don’t have something in particular in mind right now.

Do you teach grammar and spelling?

No. I teach writing. You can read more about that here, and if you still have questions, feel free to email me.

I’m working on an essay/memoir/novel already. Can I bring it to your class?

Maybe! Email me so we can discuss.
